The Portugal News - 01 April 2006 "Countries unite to save community playgroup The Hardingham district pre-school playgroup is an integral and important part of a small community in Hardingham, UK. However, faced with a lack of funds with which to ensure the playgroup’s future, the committee, led by treasurer Nicola Elven, devised a unique Grand Draw to attract attention and raise revenue: a long weekend in the beautiful Algarve.
We had done fund-raising events before, like tombolas and jumble sales, but nothing on this scale”, explained Nicola. “We decided that we needed to do something a little different, something wild, so we thought ‘what is the best we can come up with?’ and went a bit mad!” So, with the collaboration of The Portugal News in helping to enlist various willing contributors, who all accepted immediately and donated generously to create the star prize, an outstanding Grand Draw was presented to the local public and caused something of a minor frenzy. Over 800 tickets were sold, and the lucky winners, Barry Peel and Karen Kelly from the neighbouring village of Hingham, flew over last Friday, March 24th, to enjoy their unexpected holiday and their first time in Portugal. Travelling in style with return flights graciously conceded by British Airways, the three-nights accommodation was provided by luxurious four-star Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra, where the couple’s every need was catered for; sea-view included! And just to complete their wonderful four-day stay, the couple further enjoyed full use of a stylish Hyundai Getz, courtesy of leading car-rental company Auto Rent. “It has been brilliant”, said Karen, “We found out about the draw through friends and decided to buy a ticket each too. The playgroup is extremely important to the local community, especially for the children, so we wanted to do our part. It is the first time the playgroup has ever done anything like this and it was an extremely popular idea. I couldn’t believe it when I was told we had won, we only bought two tickets! We are just very pleased that we could do our bit. Everything has been fantastic. We have had a brilliant time”. Hotel Garbe director Vicki Good echoed these thoughts by adding “We are more than happy that we are in a position to be able to help the cause, and we are very pleased to do so. It is a real ‘feel good’ factor. To be told that everything has been wonderful is even better, but that is what we are here for, to ensure all our clients enjoy their holiday”. Spokesperson and Auto Rent Portugal car hire, Faro airport car hire and Algarve car hire representative António Valagão also added: “This is the first time that Auto Rent has participated in such a cause, but we are very happy to have done so and hopefully it won’t be the last!” In total, the ‘Special Almond Blossom visit to Portugal’ prize draw raised over £700 to be put towards the playgroup’s continuation. And after four days of delicious breakfasts, total relaxation and classy transportation, what did the couple think of their lucky prize draw? “I only wish we could stop a little longer”, said Barry, “but we will definitely return!”
